Wetland Availability and Salinity Concentrations for Breeding Waterfowl in Suisun Marsh, California

نویسندگان

چکیده

Availability of wetlands with low salinities during the breeding season can influence waterfowl reproductive success and population recruitment. Salinities as 2 ppt (3.6 mScm–1) impair duckling growth behavior, mortality occurring above 9 (14.8 mScm–1). We used satellite imagery to quantify amount available water, sampled surface water salinity at Grizzly Island, in brackish Suisun Marsh, three time-periods (April, May, July) over 4 years (2016–2019). More was lower wetter (2017, 2019) than drier (2016, 2018), decreased 73%–86% from April July. Across all years, majority (64%–100%) wetland habitat area had what has been shown negatively affect ducklings (> ppt), up 42% associated ppt). During peak production 81%–95% ppt, 5%–21% ppt. In May driest year (2016), only 0.5 km2 low-salinity (< ppt) study area, compared 2.6 wettest (2017). Private duck clubs own Island consistently a greater percentage land flooded summer did publicly owned wetlands, but private generally higher public likely because they draw higher-salinity sources. By July, few remained flooded, most high enough survival. Local populations would benefit management practices that provide fresher retain more through

Invasion Age and Invader Removal Alter Species Cover and Composition at the Suisun Tidal Marsh, California, USA

Wetland ecosystems are vulnerable to plant species invasions, which can greatly alter species composition and ecosystem functioning. The response of these communities to restoration can vary following invader removal, but few studies have evaluated how recent and long-term invasions can affect the plant community’s restoration potential. Perennial pepperweed (Lepidium latifolium) has invaded th...

Swine Lagoon Wastewater Treatment in Marsh- Pond/Floating Wetland-Marsh Constructed Wetland

Constructed wetlands have been used effectively to reduce the mass loads of organic and nutrient components from swine anaerobic lagoons. Continuous marsh wetlands with gentle slope and intermittent flows seem to be the best for promoting oxidation and minimizing ammonia volatilization. However, the pond section of the marsh-pond-marsh section could potentially be effectively aerated by mechani...

Long-term relationship between phosphorus inputs and wetland phosphorus concentrations in a northern Everglades marsh.

Assessments of long-term relationships between changes in nutrient inputs and wetland nutrient concentrations can be complicated by fluctuations in other environmental factors as well as by problems typical of long-term monitoring data. Consequently, statistical analysis of these types of data sets requires careful consideration of environmental covariates, potential biases in the monitoring de...

The study of species diversity of waterfowl and waders in Gandomman wetland

The objective of this paper was determining population and species diversity of water birds and waders in Gandoman wetland during one year from mid-September 2017 to mid-September 2018 using SDR-IV software. Result showed from 70 identified birds, 28 species were waterfowl and 42 species were waders. The largest population was belong to Fulica atra. Anatidae with 33.19 percent frequency was the...

Breeding Salinity Tolerant Grape rootstocks

Understanding the mechanism of salinity tolerance in any crop plant is a prerequisite to crop development with regards to this trait. However, analogous to agronomic breeding for yield, salt tolerance breeding in grapevines is hampered by the complex nature of the plant response to a soil solution containing a high concentration of salt (reviewed in M. Ashraf and P.J.C. Harris, eds., 2005, Abio...
